NEWSBRIEF - Vitamin C helps prevent CHD.
A major study involving over 85,000 female nurses found that supplementing with vitamin C helps prevent coronary heart disease. The nurses were followed for 16 years during which time 1356 of them had a nonfatal heart attack (myocardial infarction) or died from CHD. Nurses who supplemented with vitamin-C had a 28% lower risk of CHD than did non-users of vitamin C supplements after adjusting for age, smoking and a variety of other CHD risk factors. A high intake of vitamin C from the diet (excluding supplements) was not significantly associated with a lower incidence of CHD.
